Since The Lucky Cat does a thriving daytime coffeehouse business, it's entirely possible to spend an entire indolent Saturday there, watching as the light slowly wanes, the scene transforms, and the lattes are magically replaced by bottles of Negra Modelo as local bands and DJs set up for the nearly nightly music events ranging from reggae to quality rock. The Lucky Cat's capacious space and homey, careworn décor make the transition seem more than natural. Book clubs find that the multiple cozy nooks—teal banquettes and antique tables—suit their meetings perfectly, but for tete-a-tetes of a more intimate nature, there's probably no more romantic spot in the 'Burg than the tiny, verdant back garden, graced by a koi pond and rustic climbing vines. It’s an appropriate spot to sip a Spicy Bean Bloody Mary, made with piquant pickled green beans.

Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
