Depending on where you live, this homey bar is either worth the trip or the best thing about your neighborhood. Like its jukebox, which features all the barroom standards (Stones, Zep) plus a slew of eccentric extras (Primus, the Hedwig soundtrack), the Lyric Lounge is exactly what you'd expect from a great laid-back local—only weirder and better. The wood-paneled main room’s classic fixtures include Cal, a gravel-voiced regular whose status as "the mayor of Greenpoint" tends to go unchallenged. There's a rotating cast of sweet, Suicide Girl-ish bartenders who are happy to take a break from pulling cheap Michelob Lights to serve you a Key Lime Pie (the drink, not the dessert). And if pool, Galaga, Playboy pinball and an excellent selection of board games aren't enough to keep you entertained, there's always the bar's personable cat, a small gray tabby named Monica. She likes to hang out in the spacious back garden and watch the blue-collar longtime Nassau-dwellers and twentysomething Greenpoint frontier-busters bum each other’s cigarettes. Chances are, so will you.

Performances from nearby bands occasionally enliven the bar, but there's almost never a cover.
