When the new owners stripped down the charming space formerly known as Masat, they kept the silver deco ceiling and the larger-than-life mural of swinging dance couples. But the attempt at merging minimalist club chic with a 30s speakeasy results in a seriously confused visual: blue lights cast an eerie glow on the painted back wall as well as the cubic furniture (square stools, square cocktail tables, square plush cube seats) and the cheap aluminum surfacing throughout emulates the ceiling without evoking its retro style. While the bar shines literally, the limited drink menu could use more polish and diversity. (The key lime martini is the most intriguing option.) Most nights, a DJ perched above the crowd spins 80s pop and R&B to a jovial mid-20s professional-looking clientele in search of that downtown je ne sais quoi. Perhaps nothing more than an easy alternative to mammoth clubs like nearby BLVD.
ExtraA downstairs lounge can be reserved for private parties and is a bit more suave and inviting than the cobbled-together decor upstairs.
