The cozy Mansfield Hotel isn't exactly part of the chic-boutique-hotel mania that's swept the city, but a renovation has nonetheless made it one of midtown's most pleasant smaller hotels. M Bar, the Mansfield's lounge, shares the hotel's clubbish appeal, with a wall of books imparting a library vibe and a horseshoe-shaped bar to encourage flirting (it's a hotel bar, after all). With its business clientele and subdued atmosphere, M Bar opts for straightforward, upscale bar selections; specialty cocktails would be considered declasse here. Go for a scotch and enjoy the tinkling jazz coming out of the sound system—or, on Wednesdays, from a live combo. — Matt Dobkin

My husband and I recently visited NY and stayed at the Mansfield Hotel. Their lounge, the M Bar, was a very pleasant surprise in the middle of Midtown crazy. The weeknights had a good sized crowd with (what looked like) a lot of suits seeking a mature happy hour with live jazz and martinis. But the weekends were the best. The bar turns into a very cozy, candle-lit, romantic hideaway with comfy booths, great food, and amazing service. The space itself was beautiful with tons of old books, a back-lit bar and a gorgeous domed skylight. I'd say the only disappointment was that it closed a bit early - midnight (we got too comfortable). But I'd recommend this place to anyone and will definitely be back....and try the blueberry martini - a must!

I don't know what the guy was talking about in his review, this place is one of my favorite places to go after work. I reccomend it all the time, the atmosphere is terrific with good music, which they have live on certain days during the week, and the staff is very friendly they always remember my name & my drink. The food is good with a lot of small plate choices, and they have a pretty decent wines by the glass menu. I have always been more than happy with my visits to the M-bar!
