If you long for those bygone college days of bars that smell of stale beer and being affronted by the wailing sounds of second-rate, aspiring musicians while your feet stick to a mucky floor, then Mad River is the place for you. Of the two floors, the bottom, long room has a copper-top bar and some tables usually filled with men in their early twenties, munching on an array of greasy nachos and wings. There’s a decent Happy Hour called VIP Fridays, when $5 at the door gets you $1 drinks from 7pm-10pm. There’s also a late-night meat-market on the weekends around 4am, so if you’re a woman, consider yourself forewarned—unless, of course, you miss those years of dingy basements, foamy kegs, and guys yelling, “Chug!” — Emma Rosenblum
