Profile

If you long for those bygone college days of bars that smell of stale beer and being affronted by the wailing sounds of second-rate, aspiring musicians while your feet stick to a mucky floor, then Mad River is the place for you. Of the two floors, the bottom, long room has a copper-top bar and some tables usually filled with men in their early twenties, munching on an array of greasy nachos and wings. There’s a decent Happy Hour called VIP Fridays, when $7 at the door gets you $1 drinks from 7-10pm, and half-price appetizers at the bar. There’s also a late-night meat-market on the weekends around 4am, so if you’re a woman, consider yourself forewarned—unless, of course, you miss those years of dingy basements, foamy kegs, and guys yelling, “Chug!”

i'm shocked at the good reviews. this is the worst bar in new york city, period. i get conned into going here once in awhile, usually by people visiting in the post- rich kid liberal arts college scene or by recent transplants (of the same type). which is fine, but if you want a fratty, stale-beer kind of place, there are better places to go, especially on the upper east side. even dorian's or pat o'briens is better. the drinks are weak and it's too crowded to be fun. and "hottest girls in manhattan"? oh, god....

Great bar..great looking crowd, great drinks and food, great music!

This is the best place to be on a Saturday night. The crowd is great, theres a nice variety of 21 to 30 somethings. The girls are probably some of the hottest I've seen in Manhattan bars and I've gone to quite a few. The bartenders are great as well. Drinks are always good and their not cheap with the liquor like some of the places I've been to. Also, most of the bartenders are unbelieveably hot! The food is great, with a variety of fries, wings etc. However. the thing I love the most is the music. Everytime I've gone the DJ has been amazing, playing a variety of hip-hop, r&b, old school 80's and 90's mixed in as well. Not like the typical techno you hear in most places. I would definately recommend this bar!
