Comprised of long-steeped mystery twigs, leaves, seeds, and Dominican Brugal rum, the beverage Mamajuana has a spicy aroma that perfumes this cozy bar, and its aphrodisiacal claims are borne out by dancers who salsa lasciviously long into the night. Owners Baron and Ray have paid close attention to every detail of this decadently red-lit drinking den's décor: Street-corner furnishings and portraits of Baron’s mother and grandmother make the space feel lovably personal and eclectic, while coconut trees on the bar add a tropical touch. The signature elixir gets whipped into a variety of sweet drinks: Most popular among the ladies is the pineapple Sneaks Up On You, which does. The non-Mamajuana-based selections represent other Latin countries: Peruvian pisco sours, Mexican margaritas, and Brazilian caipirinhas are all expertly mixed. Live jazz and impromptu lessons on traditional Dominican instruments round out the one-of-a-kind experience.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
