Some bars are about sports or music or romance or classy decor. This neighborhood favorite is about dirt-cheap booze with more than 55 varieties of beer and seasonal cocktails, all costing less than a five-minute cab ride. The specialties are bourbon-based classics; the mint julep that will make you forget the word mojito. As to the setting, it's reassuringly standard. There's plenty of comfortable seating, a weathered pool table, a jukebox full of mid-90s rock, and amateur art and ephemera on the walls. Homesteaders with dogs and babies in tow sip nightcaps alongside sexy young things just starting their evenings. After a couple of those and a bowl of freshly-popped corn from the vintage machine barside, you'll nod your head in agreement when the jukebox declares that "Today is the greatest."
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
