This venue is closed. Staffers aren't sure when the small brass plaques bearing the names of regulars were screwed into the lip of the well-worn wooden bar—some time after a previous incarnation of the space opened in the 1930s—but along with the mosaic tile floor and the tin ceiling, these nameplates lend a touch of history to an otherwise run-of-the-mill watering hole. Like a non-franchised version of TGI Fridays, the original location of this mini-chain delivers all the basics in a familiar form: for sustenance that means hamburgers, sandwiches, pastas, salads, and a solid beer selection on tap; for setting, that means televised sports, mirrors behind liquor bottles, a color scheme favoring earth tones, and sidewalk seating in summer. The Yorkville branch gains a little more local flavor thanks to its policy of having guest bartenders every Wednesday. —David S. Hirschman
