The late Allen & Delancey space was reborn in fall 2010 as a swinging Scottish manor: booths are upholstered in red tartan and leather, a glamorous mirrored ceiling hangs over the bar, and ornate wood panels separate the back dining room. As at the owners’ first venture, Highlands, Scotch features heavily in the drinks list, though after sampling some of the too-sweet “scotch-tails”, you’ll probably prefer to drink the stuff straight, or select something from the French-focused wine list. Foodwise, silky house-smoked Scottish salmon arrives on a vintage china plate with rye crisps and horseradish cream; mushroom toasts with egg is another satisfying starter. Steak and roast-chicken entrees are proficiently cooked, but the straightforward preparations detract from the fantasy that you’re dining in Sean Connery’s Scottish-countryside home. Better to stick to the menu of $6 snacks like bacon-wrapped dates and various terrines designed to accompany boozing.
