The very wee Mayflower is predictably Brooklyn in its selection of unique cocktails and consciously quirky décor, but what it lacks in size and novel design it makes up for in a relaxed atmosphere and decent pricing. Also known as The Mayflower Social, this adorable Fort Greene establishment features seasonal cocktails as well as a small selection of wines and beers on tap, including Six Point Bengali Tiger and Sumpin’ Sumpin’, though the bartenders can make a sazerac or martini upon request. The bar is the sidecar to Aita, an Italian restaurant that uses mainly local, organic ingredients, and Mayflower patrons can order nibbles without losing their spot at the marble bar. (Full dinner menu, however, is only available at the restaurant.) A typical evening at the Mayflower begins with patrons trickling into the candlelit space beginning at 7, when doors open, to take advantage of the happy hour discounts and the music, which is an excellent selection of everything from British blues to obscure grunge. While you wouldn’t want to show up unannounced with a crowd –– the place couldn’t possibly accommodate more than forty slim people –– the space is available to rent for special occasions.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
