As Times Square warps into the future, this nod to the way things used to be draws the like-minded with its nostalgic glow. Literally. Just look for the decrepit red-and-green lettered neon sign out front. The theater crowd (as in stage crew) hangs out up front. The bar there is a '40s fetishist's dream, all chrome and dull mirrors. Wooden Venetian blinds contribute to the time-warp ambience, keeping the place comfortably dark even in the afternoon. It does get crowded, but in a make-friends-easily way; a fine selection of beer and whiskey facilitates that process. The real surprise, though, is in back, where a full kitchen serves up some of the best burgers anywhere.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
