The new new nightspot may have gravitated elsewhere, but this SoHo staple hasn't lost its appeal. In the wake of the models who used to hang here, an affable, decently dressed crowd of European tourists and boutique shoppers sip cocktails with names like Sexy Sadie and Mr. Moonlight. MercBar's aesthetic bears more than a passing resemblance to the offbeat vision of David Lynch's Twin Peaks: Navajo oilskin paintings and deer horns hang on the walls; a suspended canoe glows above the bar like an Iroquois chandelier; banquettes are upholstered in cowhide. You're not quite sure why you're here—but that feeling just adds to MercBar's air of uncanny calm.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
