Though the name may be a turnoff to those with a social conscience, this lounge succeeds in filling a gap in the Lower East Side landscape by providing an upscale spot to have a well-made cocktail (no Pabst here), while tucked safely away from the teeming masses on nearby Orchard and Ludlow Streets. The bi-level space is decked out in fabrics like pony-hair and luxe leather, and the staff is gorgeous. Early sightings of celebrities like P. Diddy and Kelly Osbourne made Mission a velvet-rope destination when it first opened; luckily, the buzz has died down and mortals are now welcome. Upscale specialty cocktails like the Mint Chocolate Martini (white and brown Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, Crème de Menthe and milk) are de rigeur, but be prepared to order bottles unless you sit at the bar. The management also offers the Mission membership ($500), which enables patrons to skip the line and attend private parties for free. — Sara Cardace
