Though the name may be a turnoff to those with a social conscience, this lounge succeeds in filling a gap in the Lower East Side landscape by providing an upscale spot to have a well-made cocktail (no Pabst here), while tucked safely away from the teeming masses on nearby Orchard and Ludlow Streets. The bi-level space is decked out in fabrics like pony-hair and luxe leather, and the staff is gorgeous. Early sightings of celebrities like P. Diddy and Kelly Osbourne made Mission a velvet-rope destination when it first opened; luckily, the buzz has died down and mortals are now welcome. Upscale specialty cocktails like the Mint Chocolate Martini (white and brown Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, Crème de Menthe and milk) are de rigeur, but be prepared to order bottles unless you sit at the bar. The management also offers the Mission membership ($500), which enables patrons to skip the line and attend private parties for free.

Right, so, Mission. There are no words, really. I'm no stranger to NYC nightlife nor to the creatures and hovels that color the landscape. However, I was appalled by what passed for service, let alone common decency and basic rules of human interaction at this 'spot.' (I don't need anybody to hold my hand but I certaintly don't expect foul snarl from the hideous cashier I've just given my money to). Exceedingly shady, rude and inattentive service by both management and staff. Pushy security who obviously missed the 'keep your hands to yourself' lesson in 1st grade. To round out the night - super pricy drinks (baby, for 16 bucks I better get a lap dance), unimpressive, tacky, unpleasant crowd and the distinct feeling you’ve just been scammed - somehow. Skip it. It’s a sad little mark on the face of NYC’s nightlife.
