If you're looking to simulate a swank fundraiser at the Met (albeit in a garish fashion), the lighting at this airy restaurant is almost as institutionally bright and there are hieroglyphs cheerily-painted on the walls. Hulking Moroccan colored-glass lanterns and whirring fans suspended from a patterned blue-and-gold ceiling practically demand that you imbibe one of the thirty varieties of fruity martinis (akin to vodka smoothies) if only to counteract the visual overload. From on high, a D.J. spins retro pop aimed at getting the ethnically-mixed, older loungers—some from the hotel next door—off the pillow-strewn banquettes and onto the makeshift dance floor. If this, combined with a faux mummy case and the dozens of hookah flavors, sounds a little kitschy, rest assured that the kitchen, open until 4 a.m. on weekends, wants to be taken seriously.
ExtraSunday and Tuesday through Thursday, dinner is served until 2 a.m., and from Friday to Saturday until 4 a.m.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
