A neighborhood relic, Mooney's Pub is the kind of dive that welcomes all poor souls who need a cold beer, even if it's 8am. The glowing green-neon shamrock in the window might lead you to believe that this is an Irish pub, but besides a few Irish road signs and the obligatory cead mile faite plaque, the rest of the décor is all football pennants, beer signs, American flags, and a bunch of old-guy regulars that look like they've been warming the same stools since Nixon was in office. Aside from a lovely old wooden bar and banister that stretches along the outline of the room, the place has a unkempt look: scuffed-up chairs and linoleum floors. On the jukebox, classic and alternative rock mixes it up with funk, punk and old-school country. The dartboard gets increasingly popular as the night goes on—something to consider before you down another pint, since the board's just a wayward throw away from the route to the restrooms. Stick to whiskey—and watching the game on the TV.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
