Profile

In NYC, there are two kinds of Irish pubs: those that try too hard, and those that try really hard to look like they're not trying at all. The truly effortless Mr. Dennehy's earned a slot in a Guinness commercial without taking either approach. At this tidy restaurant and pub, owner Donal Dennehy (of Cork, Ireland) hasn't bothered with the usual Irish-bar distractions. There are no dart boards, no billiards, no shamrocked paeans to the joys of a pint. Instead, this relaxed spot strips it down to the basics—a pub-house façade, exposed brick walls, bartenders with the gift of gab and a brogue, and a broad array of whiskeys and beers. In between games, the bar's own soccer-league can be found catching up on world cup status on one of nine plasma-screen TVs. An outdoor café, overlooking Seventh Avenue and serving the pub's full menu, draws a mellow crowd in the warmer months.

Nothing special

As much as I'd like to, I can't find a whole lot of anything special about this place. It's nicely appointed, with the brick & the brass, but that's about all there is to it. The drink selections are your standard fare, the beers run the usual range of stouts, pilsners and ales, and the food was revamped recently to appeal to a more upscale (read, pricey) crowd. It's a convenient place to go if you work nearby, but hardly worth a trip out of your way. And if you are the type of person that regularly patronizes a place believing that you are appreciated as a customer, look elsewhere. Despite regularly dropping by for the last 3 years, I have yet to be offered a buyback or even so much as a hearty welcome when I arrive. If you bring your own crowd, you'll be fine as long as you don't mind the ignorant staff and bland food. If you're looking to mingle or eat something nice, don't bother.
