The usual New York City Irish Pub formula applies: a dark room, five TVs all tuned to sports, and a menu full of bar food and meat pies. The beer tastes a little stale, and the space appears down on its heels just enough to give it a rare, ever-so-slight authenticity, worn down just enough to make you feel like you’re in a real pub on the Emerald Isle. The glassware is mismatched, with a rogue New York Jets pint glass sitting among others bearing brewery logos. Behind the bar hangs a sickle, a pair of sheep shears, and, naturally, a shillelagh. A homemade sign for the “complaint department” features a button glued to the trigger of a mousetrap (you do the math), but the bartenders couldn’t be friendlier. The crowd of midtown office workers, tourists who’ve wandered away from Grand Central Station without consulting a guidebook, and elderly people who may or may not actually be Irish, is oddly relaxing. Muldoons will never be perfect, but you could do a lot worse. It’s prime for when you’re ready to have one too many on a rainy day. And when the sun is shining, out back there’s a tiny, tiny patio.
