If you're the type who likes to play games while you drink, here's another one for you: shuffleboard! Serving the beer-and-ball community since 1967, Nancy Whiskey is one of the only bars in New York that offers this particular mechanical distraction (bank shuffleboard). The amicable, heavy-drinking working-stiff crowd is happy to let you play as long as you partake sufficiently in the wide range of cheap, intoxicating beverages, which start flowing at 9 a.m. sharp (noon on Sundays). By the end of the night, some of the old-timers look as if they need to be carted out in wheelbarrows. And don't worry about losing your motor skills—everyone else has. — Peter Landau

A true skel bar just below Canal St. Dont make a special trip. The place is pretty dingy with nicotine colored walls and ceilings. The prices are good and the drinks gererous. It is populated with mostly local working guys and can get loud and argumentitive, They put a board across the kitchen board in the evening, not to keep the customers out but to keep the subway rats from mixing with the public. The food is decent anyway but the customers are not picky. The bathrooms are about as big as a phone booth and the loft ceiling is extremely low. You can have a good time here but anyplace is fun if you have the right crowd and someone to talk to and drink with.

I was walking around Tribeca one afternoon and happened upon this small neighborhood pub and decided to check it out. It has one deck table overlooking the sidewalk and a bird's eye view of the park across the street from a bar stool. The regulars range from artists to businessmen, cops and firefighters depending on the time of day or night. Melissa, the day bartender is great and really knows her stuff. The place is casual and friendly and there's serious shuffleboard mania. The food is non-fancy standard old school pub grub. Don't expect chocolate martinis but yes, there's Blue Moon. And, Melissa might make you a Sex-on-the-Beach if you ask her nicely. I love this place.
