This sensuous lounge tucked away in a cozy basement is a haven for jazz enthusiasts. Black leather banquettes and romantic tables for two line the perimeter as flickering candlelight shimmers off the low ceilings and exposed brick and stone walls. Cocktails and wine are served from the very small (three seats) but well-stocked bar. Live jazz is the reason to come to the Bar Next Door, as rotating performers and groups play seven nights a week. Guests can also enjoy the full menu (available till closing!) from the adjoining La Lanterna di Vittorio while sipping passion fruit champagne cocktails and glasses of Italian wine. Because of the intimate space, the musicians play inches away from the tables, making the experience all the more singular. The space and sounds successfully capture the quintessential New York feel of the speakeasy era, making this a must-stop for anyone wishing to experience updated-old-school Manhattan.

Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
