You can tell just by the fact that NY Perks bills itself as a — deep breath — “martini-lounge-wine-bar-grill-event-venue” that the bar tries a bit too hard. A yawning split-level with two full-sized lounges and bars on either end, the space’s upper floor has access to the smoking area (er, “cigar deck”), while the lower level leads to the street. Countless leather sofas and lurid cocktail choices — fancy a “Quickie,” “Baby Mama Drama,” or a “Pimp Slap”? — scream “adults at play,” but the over-polished décor lacks any distinct charm. The menu of mozzarella sticks and Buffalo wings doesn’t quite fit in with the private cigar deck and top-shelf bottle service. But ultimately, the one-stop-shopping vibe appears to work for Perk’s regular clientele, mostly buttoned-up African-American professionals and students from nearby LIU, who cozy up in the many overly-lit nooks.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
