Profile

At O'Connell's (formerly known as Cannon's), timing is everything. Weekends attract rowdy Columbia University students looking for action at the self-proclaimed "oldest bar on the Upper West Side." Monday through Thursday, sports draw a casually dressed, somewhat older crowd who focus their blurring eyes on one of the nine TVs, each of which might be tuned to a different game. Some nights, like Monday Night Football, come with their own drink specials and since the bar regularly broadcasts soccer, the clientele has a fair share of Europeans religiously devoted to teams like Real Madrid and Manchester United. The décor here is strictly no-nonsense New York—green walls, wooden accents, a few tributes to the NYFD. But if you're looking for a couple of beers and a night with A-Rod or Beckham, you're unlikely to need much more.

O'Connell's Pub: Just Another Generic Irish Bar Worth Skipping

While the idea of an Irish bar on the UWS is good, this bar is actually disgustingly generic and boring. It's packed with either Columbia students or firemen who hate Columbia students because they represent their failed dreams. We were so harassed there recently by a crew of old fireman that they were actually threatening to "pound our faces in" and physically stealing the beers out of our hands, all while claiming entitlement because they are "proud American firefighters." I was confused about what they were more proud of, the Bud Light running down the front of their shirts or the fact that they were threatening a woman's life. Representations of REAL fireman they were not. But the bartender did nothing to help: "They've been drinking all day, totally wasted." Since when does being drenched in cheap bear and ignorance give you a pass to harass other paying customers? The bar does have some liability there. Bars are a dime a dozen in NY, don't bother with this completely generic and sometimes hostile one.
