Nested in the heart of Williamsburg, as their slogan says, Old Rooster is a midtown-style tavern adrift in a hipster sea. Consider the décor, first of all: walls painted to look shadowed and old, a carved bar, and rustic wood chairs and low tables meant to conjure the atmosphere of an Eastern European taproom, but the effect is more Epcot than Ereschtag. This coupled with the uniformed staff, the Greatest Hits of 2002 playlist and the largely middle-aged clientele is enough to make someone who overshot the Knitting Factory’s distance feel like he’s been sucked into a wormhole. The spot does boast a nice selection of German and Belgian beers available on tap or in a bottle, with a list that includes St. Bernardus Wit, Gaffel Kolsch and staples like Bud and Stella Artois. In addition to beer, wine and standard liquor (though no special concoctions), Old Rooster has a full menu and serves up a dinner of standard bar fare like grilled chicken Caesar wraps and fried calamari, and brunch on the weekends. The only truly outstanding thing about this spot is the backyard, which is a large, beautiful space outfitted with sleek wooden booths.
