Even in the thick of Times Square O’Lunney’s long, neon sign is hard to miss. The 42-year-old bar―started by current owner Hugh O’Lunney from County Cavan in Ireland and in this location since 2005―is part traditional and part sports bar/restaurant. The menu touches on a few traditional Irish dishes—shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash—cooked by a less traditional Peruvian chef, though most of the staff are truly Irish. The patriotic flags and intricate Celtic knot woodwork along the bar catch the eye more than the few unobtrusive flat screen TVs, a combination of décor palatable for the mixed crowd of business professionals and tourists who flock during lunch, dinner and after hours. The high ceilings and long tables create a sense of being in an old hall, while the stained glass lights give a distant religious, churchly undertone easily muted by a crowd of enthusiastic drinkers. The most striking decoration is a wall sized photo mural of three women walking down a country road in Donegal, Ireland.
