Opium Den tries to be two things at once. On one hand, it's a small, flatteringly lit, scarlet-walled den with overstuffed couches and wrought-iron knickknacks—perfect for a romantic cocktail with someone special. On the other hand, it's got a doorman, velvet rope and a DJ, and tends to draw crowds for launch/wrap/holiday parties—a hopping place that would be a nightclub if this were a town that allowed dancing. These goals don't quite mix, unless, of course, you manage to hook up at that ad firm shindig because you're tipsy and pressed up close against a stranger, feeling grateful that the amber bulbs disguise the bags under your eyes... —Lissa T.
