The modest seasonal bar-cafe that sets up shop in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza is akin to the drinking and snacking terraces that are ubiquitous in places like Madrid. Across from the United Nations building, a few dozen patio tables and chairs surround a tiny enclosed kitchen that serves light bites like foot-long gourmet hot dogs, sandwiches, biscotti, and croissants. Christmas tree lights strung from the kitchen's roof to the adjacent trees provide a glimmering tarpaulin, and to the left the Trump Tower rises like the obelisk from 2001: A Space Odyssey. What the live jazz band and illuminated water fountain won't do to temper the noise of traffic on First Avenue, drinks like the peachy Patio Punch, served in 20-oz. plastic cups, surely will. A couple of beers and a few wines are also available, and cappuccino keeps the diplomats sharp for spirited discussions about peacekeeping.
ExtraThe Patio has no official opening and closing months—the owners prefer to play it by ear. The café is open from 8am-8pm weekdays and 3pm-10pm on weekends. The bar is open 3pm-10pm weekdays and 3pm-9pm on weekends.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
