At first glance, all the button-ups and khakis in the crowd seem to brand this a college bar—and, indeed, there are buffalo wings on the menu and football on the flat-screens, and it’s owned by the same people behind Phebe’s on Bowery. But the prices suggest that the patrons actually belong to a class of post-collegiate professionals, probably of the “business associate” variety. The drinks aren’t exorbitant, but there’s a full martini menu and a pint of Yuengling goes for $7—just enough to deter broke NYU keg-standers. Still, after a few drinks, it’s not uncommon for the consultants and executives to get nostalgic for their younger days and head downstairs to PF13, the Penny Farthing’s stone-walled, dimly-lit party space. There, the grind-worthy pop music seems to transform them back into bros—their shirts untuck and they cozy up with ladies in the myriad dark corners and nooks. PF13 is rented out for private events about as often as it’s open to the public—typically for birthday celebrations, going-away parties and, of course, corporate functions.
