Another massive house of rock rises from Bushwick’s warehouse foundations. Despite its DIY aesthetic and bare concrete frame, the Pine Box (named for the casket factory that once occupied its space) makes for an impressive feat of salvage-yard engineering: rusted, bisected oil drums form low-lying tables; the re-appropriated ribs of wooden shipping pallets line the walls; and the massive factory ceilings provide natural reverb. Big rock sounds best with a well-poured pint, and Pine Box’s craft-heavy draft line (all domestic, vegan, micro-brews) complements a house cocktail menu colored by eccentric ingredients like homegrown chili, nutmeg, and pickle brine. Lest anyone doubt that live music is the venue’s prime currency, the clear bar top reveals a collection of ticket stubs from hundreds of shows spanning the six-string gamut and reaching back to a time well before the average patron’s first call to rock. A corner nook removed from the enormous bar leaves room for conversation, but the music on hand will usually win out—just as it should.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
