The ascent of the Plug Uglies—one of New York's nastiest downtown gangs—in the 1830s occurred simultaneously as the birth of one of the city's swankiest neighborhoods, Gramercy Park. Almost two centuries later, the former (still lowbrow) has invaded the latter (still highbrow) in the spirit of an unpretentious and irreverent Irish pub. A shuffleboard table—in constant use—spans the whole length of the back room's left wall, while a pool table squeezes into the remaining space. But would-be pool sharks mind their manners here: despite the bar's lawless namesakes, Plug Uglies' dominant clientele now are members of the NYPD's 13th precinct, who come in to do their off-duty drinking alongside a genial crowd of neighborhood regulars. And while standard-issue American beer (along with the requisite Guinness) is the tipple of choice here, most of the friendly barkeeps have their own repertoire of specialty drinks.
