With most New York wine bars aping the customs of the old country (Provence at Paradou, Sardinia at D.O.C.), it's nice to see a place that's neither bar à vins nor enoteca. Punch & Judy feels, if not authentically New World, then at least New Clinton Street. The wine list stretches from the affordable to the not-so, with 32 vintages available by the glass; on the menu are braised short ribs and chocolate fondue. And the room has deep, dark red couches to match all the vin rouge.

Bad service and rediculously loud music change what could be a good evening into one of shouting across tables. The place boasts a great wine list and interesting menu choices, but the portions are meager. Perhaps with a better listening ambiance, the subtlty and sophistication of the place will progress.

I've been here twice and the wine selection and the wine were both excellent. The service is top notch with knowledgeable/friendly pourers who know their wines. Try the cheese plate
