Self-styled a “Pub and Cooker,” the large, saloon-type aesthetic at Putnam’s evokes the kind of smoke-filled halls of 19th Century New York. Of course, in the Boss Tweed era, one didn’t trip over baby strollers or compete for tables with designer-bespectacled breeders. That said, notes of authenticity survive: cask beers are on tap, as is a prominent whiskey shelf, and the overall convivial feel of the place blends well with the attempt at period details. And while neighborhood purists will likely still opt for their drinks next door at Rope and their pub eats up the street at Maggie Brown, this notable addition to this perpetually-evolving strip in Clinton Hill will likely continue to pack them in.
