Originally opened by the legendary British actor Basil Rathbone—he played Sherlock Holmes fourteen times from 1939 to 1946—Rathbones has been going strong since 1976. It’s a casual neighborhood bar through and through, from the checkered tablecloths to the hand-painted window art to the sawdust-laden floor. Wooden booths run into the dining area, one complete with a stage for live music; decorative stained-glass windows pay homage to Holmes as well as the local teams. 11 flat-screens and a large pull-down projector make for proper game-night viewings, while a dangling disco ball serves as a reminder that Friday and Saturday nights mean a D.J. and dance party.
Best of New York: Fun & Nightlife
Cocktails at the movies, a Monday-night bacchanal, and a great rookie-rap show.
