Red Café is inauspiciously stashed up a stairway in midtown, better to keep this funky, Far Eastern artist’s haunt under wraps. The Korean–owned bar has long been a regular watering hole for Asian creative types enrolled in F.I.T., Parsons, and Pratt or expatriated from Seoul. Contemporary art pieces from the owner’s personal collection cover the walls, but his house drink “The Tornado,” which involves hurling a napkin at the ceiling, is just as fun to look at. The soundtrack jumps from Native Tongues hip-hop to J-pop remixes, but those looking to control the tunes can rent the front room for karaoke. Chalk up the popcorn machine, lollipops, and the greeter to Koreatown kitsch. And wear a coat in winter. Red Café is cool, and we mean that literally.
