The Red Velvet Lounge is a chic, hidden little spot with a big pre-recession mentality ($18 cocktails! $3 mandatory coat check!). The bar is owned by the same group that runs the Eldridge and the Yard, and each of Red Velvet’s signature delicious cocktails is paired with a special liquor-infused cupcake courtesy of Baked by Melissa. The tiny treats, such as the Stoli Gala Applik Vodka and Cinnamon Cupcake, are exceptionally tasty, but they go for three for $15 (you can get cheaper and bigger, albeit virgin, cupcakes down Rivington at Sugar Sweet Sunshine, to name but one place). The ambiance is French Revolution meets modern lounge, with tastefully lit molding on the walls and screens of Marie Antoinette and other ancien regime figures staring down from the walls. There’s a D.J. every night threading together beats, and the scene trends toward the young and the beautiful.
Picnics with a view, roller-skating nostalgia, and a party for gay headbangers.
