When condos forced rock bar R and R to retreat from the Meatpacking District, owners Larry Kramer and Craig Koenig headed up to Woodstock to, well, stock up on wood. They’ve put it to good use, too, at their handsome hangout where tree stumps double as tables and your chair just might be a plain pine bench. In the back of the room, the woodsy atmosphere gets a little more cosmopolitan with pleather banquettes and a backlit wall of forest scenes but if the red antler chandeliers and the birch branch shelves still have you feeling like you’re trapped inside Big Buck Hunter, ease the fear with an expertly rendered cocktail: the Southern Retreat combines bourbon, ginger beer, and cranberry juice with cinnamon molasses not tapped from that tree-house D.J. booth. — Daniel Maurer
