Profile

When condos forced rock bar R and R to retreat from the Meatpacking District, owners Larry Kramer and Craig Koenig headed up to Woodstock to, well, stock up on wood. They’ve put it to good use, too, at their handsome hangout where tree stumps double as tables and your chair just might be a plain pine bench. In the back of the room, the woodsy atmosphere gets a little more cosmopolitan with pleather banquettes and a backlit wall of forest scenes but if the red antler chandeliers and the birch branch shelves still have you feeling like you’re trapped inside Big Buck Hunter, ease the fear with an expertly rendered cocktail: the Southern Retreat combines bourbon, ginger beer, and cranberry juice with cinnamon molasses not tapped from that tree-house D.J. booth.

After being overcharged by the bartender and receiving the entirely wrong (and $10 short) change, my friend was yelled at by the bartender for questioning him. Last time I checked, two vodka sodas would not be $40. Unless you put down a credit card since there's a $40 limit. Even after swiping my card and realizing the minimum, upon asking for another drink, I was laughed at. After specifically making sure the tip box was X'ed out for awful service, I see a $20 tip was added on my online bank statement a few days later. If you're looking for a bad time, go here and you won't be dissapointed.

I don't even want to give a 1.0

I went to Retreat on Saturday, Nov. 17th. The entire staff was incredibly rude. My first drink was from the female bartender. I paid her in cash and she yelled "If you're not going to leave me a tip then you shouldn't bother coming back to this bar" and walked away. I went to the other male bartender and he waved me off until my friend was able to order drinks for us. At the end of the night as I was walking out I heard a man talking to the bouncer trying to get in. I was so annoyed at this venue that I just said "Don't even bother trying to get in, it's not worth it". After which the bouncer said, "Why don't you just walk your fat ass home". This bar is very "Bridge & Tunnel" and there is absolutely no diversity there. I think the only good part about this bar is that there was no cover, but it's because their drinks are at least $12-13 instead of the average NYC price of $10 a drink.
