Profile

"The Riv" makes a persuasive argument for the kind of buffalo-wings-and-draft-beer lifestyle associated more with Big Ten college towns than with the West Village. Though 16 TVs show non-stop gridiron and hoop action, the real sport here is people watching: The Riviera's split-level, glassed-in layout affords an unobstructed panorama of the always-bustling street. Draft choices are pre-microbrew unimaginative, and the menu is tailored to those who think fried is a food group. The happy hour deals extend to most top-shelf booze, but the best offer yields a burger the size of a softball on a Kaiser roll, with fries and a pint for $8.95.

Brunch

Sat.–Sun., 11 a.m.–4 p.m.; $11.95 prix-fixe, includes one drink.

worst experience in a restaurant ever

While ordering, I asked my waiter if a particular dessert had flour (since I have celiac disease), and he responded no. When it came out, it clearly had a layer of cake, and I sent it back. Meanwhile, my friendÂ’s order was completely wrong--she ordered apple cobbler; he brought her cheesecake. Instead of offering another choice, the manager came over and yelled at me. He told me that the most basic ingredient in cake is flour. I tried to explain, but he would not let me get a word in. I eventually managed to tell him that I had specifically asked if the dessert had flour. Then, I was about to take a bite of the filling of my friend's cheesecake, and he came over and yelled at us more, telling us that cheesecake has flour in it. I didn't want to argue any more, but my friend jumped in and tried to stand up for me. Therefore he proceeded to yell at her. This experience was so unnecessarily horrible. The people that I had interactions with at the Riviera Cafe were uncommonly ignorant, and I would definitely not recommend it to anyone.

Hospitality!
