The lowdown

Settled in the heart of Hell’s Kitchen in the ‘30s, old-timers still drink themselves to death around the bar of this mainstay dive, but local youngsters, businessmen, and the ubiquitous hipster element now rule the prime real-estate red leather — covered in duct tape — booths. The real draws here have always been dirt-cheap booze (order the house brands, Ruby’s Red and Ruby’s Blond, by the pint or pitcher), a $5 shot-and-beer “Stimulus Package,” and a free hot dog with every beer, enjoyed inside or out in the fresh air in the paving-stone-lined backyard. If only they hadn’t replaced their famous jukebox, packed with classic cool-bop jazz; the new one has a few Billie Holiday CDs sprinkled in among the U2 hits, but purists will never forgive this concession to modern times.
