In a neighborhood that’s managed to evade the grasp of the gentrification gods, Rufus maintains an authentic feel that most New Yorkers assume has gone the way of the Gaseteria. Album covers adorn one wall and the outstanding jukebox has everything from Astrid Ghilberto to the Beastie Boys to David Bowie. Regulars stop by before, during, and after happy hour to chat up Tony, the bartender-owner, who makes a strong and giant Cosmo (one that’s not easy to maneuver from the bar to the good-flea-market-find chairs up front). But while the entrance feels vaguely like a new spot on Smith Street, the back has a different quality altogether: vertical-striped wallpaper, a palm tree–printed bamboo curtain, dim orange lamps—and possible clients from the afterlife. Strange occurrences have usual customers convinced that the bar may serve more than the usual spirits, but Tony eschews this idea citing that he doesn’t believe in ghosts. (This despite his being able to give a pretty detailed description of something specter-like he witnessed one night.) But don’t be spooked—if it’s possible for a place to be haunted without being creepy, Rufus is that place.
