Profile

This venue is closed.

Serena is a proper, plush lounge, with low black velvet couches, deep-pink pillows, and just enough Moroccan grillwork to keep it looking (luxe) hippie. The champagne-swilling crowd, however, is not quite as eccentric as the residents of the Chelsea Hotel upstairs: Expect British girls who love 80's-revivalist fashion, and the bed-headed men who love them. (Named for original owner, bon vivant caterer Serena Bass.)

What happened to this place?

Once upon a time, I used to go here a lot. The other night I decided to stop in with some friends, and was shocked at the change. The place looked the same, but it just felt kind of creepy. I even talked to one of the waitresses about it and she said she was looking for another job. It's too bad--this place used to be fun.

Old, spooky, hotel that manages to be comfortable and relaxed. Get there early for a red velvet couch. Avoid the Friday happy hour crowd and go when empty. They actually food serve food at tables, but this place is best enjoyed simply with a glass of wine or a martini. Worth stopping by at least once if you live in the area.
