The Tudor exterior and an Everyman clientele have earned this quintessential gritty pub location shots on shows like Law & Order and Third Watch. In truth, the only “criminal” elements to be found inside are taggers from 5 Pointz art studios and lunch-breakers from the adjacent courthouse here for Guinness pairings like bangers and mash or fish and chips. On Saturdays in the summer (after P.S. 1’s “Warm-Up” party lets out across the street), young Williamsburgers hoping to counteract a day of drinking via burgers overloaded with mushrooms, Cheddar, and Irish bacon, temporarily diversify the clientele and soak up a different type of culture that comes with framed maps of Ireland and a few knickknacks from the owner’s homeland. — Daniel Maurer
