It's not just that the wine list consists of choice, eclectic selections or that you could float a penny on the crema of your delectably rich espresso. It's also the funky décor that sets Simone's apart from the usual tepid wine-and-espresso bars. Stools with tiger-striped upholstery line the black-lacquered bar; Asian-print wallpaper and ornate gold mirrors deck the walls. Crystal chandeliers glisten against the ruby-red tin ceiling, and gold beaded curtains give the place a seedy bordello feel. With sandwiches, salads and desserts served until midnight, Simone's is a great stop for a pick-me-up between bar hops—or for a late-evening tryst, as couples can discreetly recline on the black patent-leather couches. — Tisa Coen
