Taking its name from the Cockney rhyming slang term that means ‘to be a little drunk,’ this English gastropub is an excellent place to try a hand-crafted cocktail or put down some inspired grub. Slightly Oliver follows the heirloom cocktail trend with prohibition-era drinks, but it’s got a few gutsy tipples on the menu that speak to some modern ingenuity: their food-inspired cocktails feature ingredients like a tangerine/peppercorn reduction, English cucumbers and house-made bitters, so your drink will have some substance to it. Slightly Oliver’s punches have more elements than most soups—cinnamon, clove, celery water, sage, allspice, cardamom, fermented grapes, and more. The kitchen pays its dues to the bar’s British pedigree with fish and chips and sticky toffee pudding, but there’s some exciting modern fare as well: duck pastrami sliders, brioche grilled cheese, shrimp and grits, and other re-worked favorites. The bar’s décor is a weird mix of exposed brick, glitzy chandeliers, and an odd distillery-like apparatus heading into the back room, but it all somehow comes together to make a warm, friendly little place.
