Profile

This subterranean hot spot is the quintessential jazz dive—a tiny, dark dungeon of a room with walls of brick and cobblestone, a few dozen ragtag wooden chairs, and of course, formidable musicmakers who play round midnight. Smalls gained a substantial following during its first run (1993-2002) as a place where musicians rehearsed, jammed past dawn, and sometimes even slept. Since the management changed in 2007, the new owners have traded in the BYOB policy for a liquor license. The roster favors mostly younger, emerging stars like tenor sax player Grant Stewart while styles careen from post-bebop to traditional swing. Since people wander in from the street at times, every nook of standing room is sometimes taken. But considering the cover charge lasts until closing, the patient are always rewarded with a seat eventually.

Jam Sessions

Sun., 1 a.m.–4 a.m.

Best Kept Secret of Jazz

Overall Rating: 10 (Highly Recommended)

I was never into Jazz before I went to Small's. I needed a place to take a date and stumbled upon this place one night. I've been going ever since. After a walk down a flight of stairs you find yourself in a basement turned jazzclub. It's first come first served seating, and it goes quickly. Best spot is at the bar, which is nice and close to the musicians. The music is always great, and no matter where you sit you will hear the music just fine. But the atmosphere of the place makes it even better. This isn't a fancy place, but if you want an intimate place to enjoy jazz and have some drinks, this is a MUST for you.
