Profile

This venue is closed.

Though NYU-area bars are known more for crustiness than the upper crust, the former Newgate Bar and Grill has gussied itself up with a pressed-tin ceiling, giant mirrors on polished dark-wood walls, and a long mahogany bar. (Perhaps owners R.T. Agnew, Sean Twitty, and Juan Vasquez took the school’s Speakeasy 101 course.) But that’s where the classiness ends. On the backs of U-booths intended for birthday parties, it’s clearly post-final frenzies as usual as miniskirted undergrads unwittingly flaunt their underwear after downing on-the-house watermelon or apple martinis. The top-40, hip-hop jams cranked out by the D.J. at the wooden pulpit may celebrate bling, but the only sparkle you’re likely to see on the makeshift comes from the glass stones in the Stern School class rings. Should young couples wish to return to the scene of their pickup for a proper date, a pleasant open-air deck seating 75 serves up bar standards like shrimp quesadillas, burgers, and  Buffalo wings.
