This unpretentious corner bar, located among Afro-Caribbean salons, Pakistani delis, and an anarchist coffee shop, caters to a particularly diverse neighborhood crowd. There’s Peak Organic on tap for the area’s growing Pilates-and-Prius set. The owners stock up on Modelo and Corona for their Latino patronage. And promoters book live music, ranging from Haitian and reggae to jazz and open-mic, nearly every day of the week. But for all its eclectic surroundings, Solo has a rather humdrum character: no jukebox, blank walls—Budweiser paraphernalia may be the only décor to speak of. Luckily, the owners kept much of the building’s historic features intact: Soaring tin ceilings and exposed brick give Solo some welcome character. The crowd varies from night to night, but during happy hour the bar stools are routinely filled with middle-aged, after-work types who come to watch sports, play pool, and drink beer.
