Along with ex-Ruby’s manager James Willis, Anthony Martignetti has remade Bella—the subterranean lounge underneath his restaurant Bar Martignetti—as Southside. The new touches are notable. The nearly $300,000 sound system, for one. Tasteful tree-patterned wallpaper and fake palms, for another. And a now-centralized D.J. booth, for third, that boasts UES D.J.'s like Nick Cohen at the helm—but no hip-hop, explicitly forbidden in favor of soul, house, and electro. The petite venue (220 people max) also boasts long, green-leather banquettes and a black-and-white tiled floor that feels cribbed off a McMansion kitchen; the cocktail menu is highlighted by $17 piña coladas, a Singapore Sling, a gourmet fishbowl, and blueberry calvados. Early on, Martignetti claimed Southside would avoid the preppy crowd his restaurant is known for, but don’t expect too drastic a shift—on any given night, you can still find hordes of finance types and the ladies who love them. — John Wheeler-Rappe
