Profile

Even with the wildly popular Bohemian beer garden across the street, this shabby but clean rock pub gets a lively crowd of Astorians thanks to its Mediterranean-based menu and its respectable selection of brews. Vintage shade lamps and some vine-print wallpaper conjure a seventies living room, but that laid-back ambience simply attracts young moms with kids in tow in the afternoon and calm-seeking, careworn rockers and iron workers come suppertime. Local partiers arrive even later, like midnight, when the affable bartenders turn up the metal. Behind the battle-scarred brown wooden bar are surprises like Bitburger and Ayinger on draft and bottles of Hitachino from Japan and Duvel from Belgium. The menu likewise has its perks. Enjoy the French fries kissed with rosemary along with a grilled cheese of Fontina and Manouri.

Will never be back

Had the misfortune of meeting a few friends here. I started a tab with the bartender, who continued to "wait" on us at the table throughout the evening. The place was half full, but you could tell from this woman that having to come back and get something new for us every 20 minutes or so was a huge inconvenience. She huffed and threw her hands up while asking us "do you want anything now?" As we were wrapping up, she had the gall to come to us and say "The next time you come in here, everyone has to order something." We were aghast. All of us had a few drinks, some of us had food, only one person had a soda only. Astounded, all of us tipped what her attitude was worth. Some tipped some, most tipped nothing. The best part was on our way out when she checked, and shouted across the place, "Nice. Don't ever come back!" One of our party went up to her and explained exactly why she got what she did. She continued to tell us to get out and never come back. Thank you very much, I happily never will.
