Designed to look like the kitschy inside of a 1960s VW bus, Splitty-- from an owner of Pete’s Candy Store-- brings a slice of Midwestern coziness to Brooklyn. The bathrooms, the curved benches, the wood paneled walls and even the lights dangling over the bar feel lifted from an old hippy tour van from yesteryear. The bartenders are friendly, prompt and make a stiff cocktail, from classics like the Manhattan and Collins and more specialized fare like the Gordon’s Cup (gin, lime, cucumber, sugar, salt and pepper). Splitty’s draft beer selection isn’t extensive, but it’s varied: ambers, IPAs, pilsners and stouts are all available. A tiny bar-food menu offers three varieties of steamed buns: a vegan mushroom bao, a pastrami and Emmental cheese bao, and a dessert bao (toasted marshmallows, banana, Nutella and dulce de leche caramel). Thursday through Saturday nights feature a DJ and a pretty backyard makes it a great spot for drinking Session ales in the warmer months.
