If the Gaiety strip club proves a little too much for that first outing, turn to Starlight, a funky mix of Chelsea boys and East Village artistes, which provides a much less intimidating starter course in gay nightlife. Once they make it past the overcrowded front bar, straight friends can relax in the back lounge and, if all else fails, try hitting on the all-female crew of bartenders. Wednesday is comedy night, and Sunday ("Starlette") is widely considered one of the best lesbian nights in the city.

All about atmosphere

This bar is a little gem: lounge at its simplest. Cozy and friendly, there's a bar at the front and a place to lounge around on sofas in the back. I went on a Wednesday for the comedy review, and it was excellent.
