Stinger's got venom all right, and it looks and smells like someone spewed it on the floor. The place, bathed in not-so-flattering blood-red light, is downright sticky: Don't look down at the mashed pieces of gum embedded in the floor or under the pool table or squint too closely at the uninspired interiors. That said, the super-casual-bordering-on-grungy vibe apparently works for a huge number of Billyburg denizens. The atmosphere is low-key during the week, but on weekends the space is packed with a genuinely diverse crowd of young revelers milling around to hip-hop and rap. The smoky, sweaty stench lingers even longer. — Christine Egan

A sign behind the bar reads, "Get naked, free shot." According to one bartender, a few dipsomaniacs have taken up the offer. It's nice to know that even when you're broke and desperate, at the end of the night you can still score a free drink.
